How the Can You Rank? score works
No black box. Here is exactly what the tool reads, how it estimates keyword difficulty, and how the two combine into your readiness score out of 100.
Ranking on Google depends on two things you can measure before you write a single word: how competitive your keyword is, and how ready your page is to compete for it. The Can You Rank? score puts a number on both, using signals it can read honestly, plus a short checklist only you can answer about your own page.
1. What we read from your URL
The moment you submit a URL, the tool parses the address itself. It does not crawl your page (a browser cannot fetch another site's content directly), so every URL signal below comes from the address string you provide:
- HTTPS: a secure URL is a baseline trust and ranking signal.
- Keyword in the slug: how many words of your keyword appear in the URL path.
- URL depth: how many folders deep the page sits. Shallower pages are easier to crawl and rank.
- Readability: clean hyphenated slugs score higher than underscores or query parameters.
2. How we estimate keyword difficulty
Difficulty is a transparent heuristic based on the shape and intent of your keyword. It is an estimate to guide prioritisation, not a live index of competitor strength.
| Signal | Effect on difficulty |
|---|---|
| Four or more words (long-tail) | Lower |
| One or two words (broad) | Higher |
| Commercial modifier (best, buy, price, review) | Higher |
| Question format (how, what, why) | Lower, snippet opportunity |
| Local intent (near me, city) | Lower |
The result is banded into Low, Medium or High so you can see at a glance whether a keyword is worth targeting with your current page.
3. Your on-page checklist
The heaviest part of the score comes from six honest questions about your page. These are the levers that decide most rankings, and only you can answer them:
- Is the target keyword in your title tag?
- Does the page have real content depth (1,000+ words)?
- Do other pages on your site link to it?
- Does it load fast on mobile?
- Does the content match search intent?
- Do other websites link to the page?
4. How the score is combined
The URL signals and your checklist answers add up to a readiness score out of 100. That readiness is then weighed against the keyword's difficulty to produce your verdict:
- Yes, you can rank: high readiness against a Low or Medium keyword.
- Likely, with a push: readiness is ahead of difficulty, but there are gaps to close.
- Hard as it stands: a High-difficulty keyword against a page that is not yet ready.
- Not yet: foundational fixes are needed first.
